Review: Fever by Lauren Destefano

 Fever by Lauren Destefano
Published by Harper Voyager

Rhine and Gabriel have escaped the mansion, but danger is never far behind.

Running away brings Rhine and Gabriel right into a trap, in the form of a twisted carnival whose ringmistress keeps watch over a menagerie of girls. Just as Rhine uncovers what plans await her, her fortune turns again. With Gabriel at her side, Rhine travels through an environment as grim as the one she left a year ago - surroundings that mirror her own feelings of fear and hopelessness.

The two are determined to get to Manhattan, to relative safety with Rhine’s twin brother, Rowan. But the road there is long and perilous - and in a world where young women only live to age twenty and young men die at twenty-five, time is precious. Worse still, they can’t seem to elude Rhine’s father-in-law, Vaughn, who is determined to bring Rhine back to the mansion...by any means necessary.

In the sequel to Lauren DeStefano’s harrowing Wither, Rhine must decide if freedom is worth the price - now that she has more to lose than ever.

If you loved Wither you'll love Fever. This is going to be a short review because I don't want to spoil the book for anyone but don't take that as a sign that I didn't love it because I really did.

Fever starts right where Wither left off. Rhine and Gabriel are on the run and on their journey to find Rhine's twin brother Rowan. Whilst for me this book was very much a second in the series book which can be a little frustrating in itself I did enjoy it. The pair end up in some tricky situations and much is hinted at which doesn't usually appear in YA dystopian novels with regards to prostitution and exhibitionism but quite cleverly details are often left a bit sparse to leave it to you to fill in the gaps.

The second half of the book changes pace with the reappearance of the evil father in law of doom Vaughn back on the scene. His role especially in this instalment is downright sinister and creepy and while I don't want to see where his evil scheming ways go in the next instalment I also kinda can't wait to see how it goes either

The end of the book leaves you on the mother of all cliffhangers. How am I going to wait for Book 3?
