Tempest by Julie Cross
Published by Macmillan
The year is 2009. Nineteen-year-old Jackson Meyer is a normal guy… he’s in college, has a girlfriend… and he can travel back through time. But it’s not like the movies – nothing changes in the present after his jumps, there’s no space-time continuum issues or broken flux capacitors – it’s just harmless fun.
That is… until the day strangers burst in on Jackson and his girlfriend, Holly, and during a struggle with Jackson, Holly is fatally shot. In his panic, Jackson jumps back two years to 2007, but this is not like his previous time jumps. Now he’s stuck in 2007 and can’t get back to the future.
Desperate to somehow return to 2009 to save Holly but unable to return to his rightful year, Jackson settles into 2007 and learns what he can about his abilities.
But it’s not long before the people who shot Holly in 2009 come looking for Jackson in the past, and these “Enemies of Time” will stop at nothing to recruit this powerful young time-traveller. Recruit… or kill him.
Piecing together the clues about his father, the Enemies of Time, and himself, Jackson must decide how far he’s willing to go to save Holly… and possibly the entire world.

The press release for this one was bang on when it compares this book to the time travellers wife. I started it with the same feeling of confusion but suddenly everything clicked into place and I got it and thought it was awesome.
Tempest was a brilliant story for several reasons.
I really enjoyed reading a YA paranormal romance novel from a male POV as I can't recall any other, at least what I have read recently, which do just that. It made for a refreshingly different read.
The books is really strong in the way it builds up the relationships around Jackson. I loved the ones between Jackson and Holly, Jackson and his twin sister Courtney and the one between Jackson and his best friend Alex. I loved them all in different ways and thought they were all both touching and poignant for a variety of reasons.
As this book isn't out for ages I won't tell you too much about the plot or give you any spoilers but I will say that I loved the world and reasoning and why-for's built up around Jackson and his time travelling abilities. I am really looking forward to seeing where the story goes next especially after the heart wrenching ending which has left me desperate for more.
An awesome book which is going to be huge when it is released in 2012 and one I will be recommending thoroughly to others.
