Blood Promise by Richelle Mead
Published by Penguin (thanks for the review copy you awesome people)
How far will Rose go to keep her promise? The recent Strigoi attack at St. Vladimir’s Academy was the deadliest ever in the school’s history, claiming the lives of Moroi students, teachers, and guardians alike. Even worse, the Strigoi took some of their victims with them. . . including Dimitri. He’d rather die than be one of them, and now Rose must abandon her best friend, Lissa—the one she has sworn to protect no matter what—and keep the promise Dimitri begged her to make long ago. But with everything at stake, how can she possibly destroy the person she loves most?
this has been my favourite Vampire Academy book so far. I really liked that the focus of it came away from the academy and developed the overall stories in new ways.
The book follows Rose on her quest to find the newly turned Dmitri in order to carry out one of his 'final' wishes as he had told he would have preferred to be dead rather than strigoi.
The book has three natural parts - the mourning Dmitri phase, Rose's imprisonment phase and the part where Rose finally comes to her senses and gets back on track.
the first part of the book was nice in that you follow Rose to Russia and I loved that she met Dmitri's family and spent time with them. It was nice to see the roots of the god like guardian influence in Rose's life and I liked the fact that she properly got to mourn him, which couldn't have happened had she stayed at the academy.
The second part of the book involving Rose's imprisonment was a little uncomfortable to read as you knew it was wrong but you could see that the whole notion of Rose leaving was breaking her heart. I was creeped out a lot and imagine this will continue to happen in the next book too.
The third part was awesome. I loved when Rose finally got it together and got herself out and loved seeing that the kick ass heroine we have come to love was still in there.
The book brings up a lot of different things that were awesome and I think will pave the way for future books. Firstly through Rose jumping into Lissa's head you see Lissa develop as a character after going off the rails somewhat after Rose's departure. I think she will become a lot stronger in future books. The idea of spirit user and being shadow kissed were developed a lot through this book and has set up for what could be some fantastic scenes to come.
The enjoyed the final ending was fab. I am dying to find out more about Abe, and the new ideas emerging about Strigoi and spirit users. An awesome story that puts you through the wringer emotionally and puts in places lots of ideas that are building to what promises to be an awesome conclusion to the story of Vampire Academy. I cannot wait.
