Review: Nightshade by Andrea Cremer

Nightshade by Andrea Cremer Published by Atom (thank for the review copy) Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she'll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters' laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything--including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice? *** This book deserves the hype it has been getting - I had avoided getting excited about it initially but then got swept in and I am so glad I did. The best thing about this book is the characterisation. I loved Calla as the lead and looking at how she saw the world. I liked seeing how she held on to her faith in how the world should be and her role in it...

Review: The Body Finder by Kim Derting

The Body Finder by Kim Derting Published by Headline Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her "power" to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes the dead leave behind in the world . . . and the imprints that attach to their killers. Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find dead birds her cat left for her. But now that a serial killer is terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, Violet realizes she might be the only person who can stop him. Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved by her hope that Jay's intentions are ...

In my Mailbox (29)

In my Mailbox is hosted by Kristi at www.thestorysiren.com (but not this week) This post was going to feature my Christmas haul of books but I wanted to schedule this post and not have to worry about it over christmas so I have just included the books I got in the last week in the run up to Christmas. I doubt I have all of the books I am going to get for Christmas anyway as I still have to see family and they usually get me books so I'll hold that off until next week! I have received some awesome books through the post this week! Thank you to everyone who sent me all of the wonderful titles you did both this week and since I have started blogging. I never believed when I started this I would ever receive any review books. Literally over the last 2 or 3 weeks things have really started to take off from a review copies point of view and I have received quite a few fab titles. I just wanted you to know how grateful I am for them all. Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles (UK pape...

Merry Christmas!

Just a quick post today to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. I hope you all have a fab day whatever you are doing. We will probably have one of our usual Christmas days. Presents very early with my husband because I get too excited to wait - I can usually get him to make me a lovely breakfast too. We will be going over the road for Christmas Dinner to my parent's house. It'll be nice as my brother is on leave from the Royal Marines and there will be more presents. The rest of the day will be back at home not doing an awful lot. We usually end up doing more on the days surrounding christmas and can usually end up with a house full of a variety of our friends and we usually do our own christmas dinner on one of those evenings!

Review: Seers of Light by Jennifer DeLucy

Seers of Light by Jennifer DeLucy Lillian Hunt has never truly lived. Always sensing more to the world than is easily perceived, she fears that her instincts are stubborn flights of fancy, or worse, mental instability. But some things—disappearing strangers, tangible dreams, and visits from malevolent creatures—cannot be ignored. Before it's too late, Lillian is ripped from the only existence she’s ever known and thrust into a reality that she always suspected, but could scarcely believe. She must learn the truth about who she is, the powerful beings that wish to destroy her, and the two men who would die to protect her. Jennifer DeLucy has created a unique, enchanting tale of destiny and the ageless power of love in her debut novel, Seers of Light. DeLucy's novel charms readers with quirky characters, while sketching a haunting portrait of one woman's journey on the path of the supernaturally gifted. But be prepared. Once you've entered the wo...

Books I have previously loved - Twilight saga

I love twilight - I am not ashamed to say it I freaking love it as a series. I am proud to say I got into Twilight before it became to huge success it was. Before my book blogging days I read but not to the extent I read now and would only get through a couple of books a month. My husband often would order me a couple at christmas and they would often be titles I would never have heard about before because I wasn't aware to the same extent about what was about as I am now. One christmas about 4 years ago I received this .. I hadn't heard anything about and my husband bought it for two reasons. One he looked at another book I had just finished and saw what was recommended by Amazon for people who had bought that book. Secondly he said the picture reminded him of me (I still don't know quite how to take that as it is a little freaky but I suppose the hair is like mine used to be in the days before I used to see my current hairdresser - who is fabulous and semi famous) ...

Waiting on Wednesday: The Iron witch by Karen Mahoney

The Iron Witch by Karen Mahoney Published by Corgi Childrens February 2011 I am very excited about this book - I love debut authors and I love British ones! Freak. That's what her classmates call seventeen-year-old Donna Underwood. When she was seven, a horrific fey attack killed her father and drove her mother mad. Donna's own nearly fatal injuries from the assault were fixed by magic—the iron tattoos branding her hands and arms. The child of alchemists, Donna feels cursed by the magical heritage that destroyed her parents and any chance she had for a normal life. The only thing that keeps her sane and grounded is her relationship with her best friend, Navin Sharma. When the darkest outcasts of Faerie—the vicious wood elves—abduct Navin, Donna finally has to accept her role in the centuries old war between the humans and the fey. Assisted by Xan, a gorgeous half-fey dropout with secrets of his own, Donna races to save her friend—even if it means betraying ...

Review: Skinned by Robin Wassermann

Skinned by Robin Wassermann Published by Simon and Schuster Lia Kahn was perfect: rich, beautiful, popular - until the accident that nearly killed her. Now she has been downloaded into a new body that only looks human. Lia will never feel pain again, she will never age, and she can't ever truly die. But she is also rejected by her friends, betrayed by her boyfriend, and alienated from her old life. Forced to the fringes of society, Lia joins others like her. But they are looked at as freaks. They are hated...and feared. They are everything but human, and according to most people, this is the ultimate crime - for which they must pay the ultimate price. The first book in a gripping series *** I picked a copy of this up a while ago and hadn't got round to it until recently. The positive I loved the premise of this book. It is set in a world where it is possible to download a person's brain into a machine and that they can therefore live forever as a ...

Review: Freefall by Mindi Scott

FreeFall by Mindi Scott Published by Simon Pulse Seth McCoy was the last person to see his best friend, Isaac, alive, and the first to find him dead. It was just another night, just another party, just another time when Isaac drank too much and passed out on the lawn. Only this time, Isaac didn't wake up. Convinced that his own actions led to his friend's death, Seth is torn between turning his life around . . . or losing himself completely. Then he meets Rosetta: so beautiful and so different from everything and everyone he's ever known. But Rosetta has secrets of her own, and Seth soon realizes he isn't the only one who needs saving . . . How do you come back from the point of no return? *** I really enjoyed this book. I have had it for a while and haven't got round to reading it but after my recent historical fiction/fantasy stint this lovely little contemporary book was a welcome breathe of fresh air. I liked the main character of Seth bec...

Review: Parasite Positive by Scott Westerfeld

Parasite Positive by Scott Westerfeld Published by ATOM A year ago, Cal Thompson was a college freshman more interested in meeting girls and partying than in attending biology class. Now, after a fateful encounter with a mysterious woman named Morgan, biology has become, literally, Cal’s life. Cal was infected by a parasite that has a truly horrifying effect on its host. Cal himself is a carrier, unchanged by the parasite, ...more   Cal was infected by a parasite that has a truly horrifying effect on its host. Cal himself is a carrier, unchanged by the parasite, but he’s infected the girlfriends he’s had since Morgan. All three have turned into the ravening ghouls Cal calls Peeps. The rest of us know them as vampires. It’s Cal’s job to hunt them down before they can create more of their kind. . . . Bursting with the sharp intelligence and sly humor that are fast becoming his trademark, Scott Westerfeld’s novel is an utterly original take on an archetype ...

breaking up is hard to do ....

I don't intend on doing these type of posts often but I thought it might be nice to do one especially for my readers who have seen a book in one of my In my Mailbox posts and are awaiting a review. These are the books I didn't get on with this year and gave up on and why... Thirteen reasons why by Jay Asher. I took this camping with me and boy did I try (especially as I had nothing else to read) but I found the character really irritating to the point I was glad that she was dead. Gave up half way through Other opinions teen book review becky's book reviews Burned by PC and Kristen Cast I feel a little cheated when I think about this series. I read the earlier ones and liked them but got to the point where I wanted to scream at the later ones. I feel like I should continue with them just to find out what happens but I'm not sure if I can put myself through it. Other opinions The Bookshelf Sophisicate Amy Reads Eyes like stars by Lisa Mantchev I wa...

Waiting on Wednesday: Die for Me by Amy Plum

Die for me by Amy Plum Published by Atom May 2011 DIE FOR ME is the first of three books about Kate, a sixteen-year-old American who moves to Paris after the death of her parents. She finds herself falling for Vincent, who she discovers is not the typical French teenager he appears: he is something else entirely. DIE FOR ME presents a new supernatural mythology presented in a city where dreams are sometimes the same as reality. I want it! I want it now! Look at that awesome cover and the plot sounds fantastic. Books like this make me wish my life away.

Review: Guardian of the Gate by Michelle Zink

Guardian of the Gate by Michelle Zink Published by Atom The ultimate battle between sisters is nearing, and its outcome could have catastrophic consequences. As sixteen year-old Lia Milthorpe searches for a way to end the prophecy, her twin sister Alice hones the skills she'll need to defeat Lia. Alice will stop at nothing to reclaim her sister's role in the prophecy, and that's not the only thing she wants: There's also Lia's boyfriend James. Lia and Alice always knew the Prophecy would turn those closest to them against them. But they didn't know what betrayal could lead them to do. In the end, only one sister will be left standing. *** I don't have a huge amount to say about this book. I did enjoy it but I found it quite slow. It's not to say that was a bad thing necessarily but I did get the sense that it was building up to something huge which makes sense as it is the second book in a triology. I'm therefore just going ...

Review: The Maze Runner by James Dashner

The Maze Runner by James Dashner Published by Chicken House When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. His memory is blank. But he’s not alone. When the lift’s doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade—a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls. Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they’ve closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift. Thomas was expected. But the next day, a girl is sent up—the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers. Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. If only he could unlock the dark secrets buried within his mind. *** I'm not going to lie, I struggled with this book at first and actually considered giving up with it a...

In my Mailbox is hosted by the awesome Kristi at www.thestorysiren.com I wasn't out to get any books this week but I ended up with a modest haul. Crusade by Linda Press Wulfe (finished copy) I received this in the post early in the week. I am really excited to have a finished copy as I loved the cover when I first saw it and the proof was very plain (which I now have available to send out to someone in my book fairy role) I have a review going up on it very early in January 2011. A fab read and worth hunting down when it is published. The Foreshadowing by Marcus Sedgewick (hardcover signed) I don't know why I haven't read more Marcus Sedgewick as I have liked everything I have read of his so far. I found this lovely little signed number for the bargain sum of £2. Vampire Academy Cover vs Cover

I love covers and am a sucker for buying a book purely for its cover - what do you think of the new set of Vampire Academy Covers? I do like the original covers - although the first couple remind me of Buffy and how she looked on the early boxset covers. From seeing the new ones in the flesh I can say they are nice and probably brilliant for this time of year and they look christmassy with the red. What do you prefer?

Review: Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead

Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead Published by Penguin  The astonishing final novel in Richelle Mead's epic series! Murder. Love. Jealousy. And the ultimate sacrifice. Now, with Rose on trial for her life and Lissa first in line for the Royal Throne, nothing will ever be the same between them. *** All I can say is WOW!!! This book surpassed all expectations I had for it and completely rocked my socks off. Unlike all the other books in the series which plod along slowly before building up to the action, this one is action packed throughout. I literally don't know where to start with this review as I can;t put into coherent sentences exactly how much I loved this book. Therefore I am going to tell you what I liked about different parts - I can't guarantee this will be spoiler free. Rose is awesome throughout this book and its nice to see her having to think her way around situations rather than have to fight her way out of them. I loved the scenes where she was bro...
